The Complete Guide to Fall Generator Maintenance: By Licensed Electricians

Haya Umer

In the maple leaf country of Canada, the short fall season not just comes with its orange and red leaves, Tim's pumpkin spice latte but also its 'classic' fall storms. Just like every other Canadian season, Fall also comes with its own list of safety measures to take. One of them is making sure that you are not left in the dark without power during any storms.

In this Blog, we will provide you with all the tips shared by our team of licensed Electricians on keeping your generators prepared for any emergencies and running smoothly during any unexpected power outages.

Let’s dive in.

Essential Tips to Maintain Generators this Fall Season

  1. Surroundings: Start with cleaning the surrounding area of your Generator. Make sure there is no autumn debris or leaves that might be the reason for any blockages. To keep the generator safe from any flooding during the rains, place the generators on stand to keep it elevated. The generators should always be placed outside to avoid any carbon monoxide leaks.

  2. Fuel and Oiling: If your fuel is stored for more than six months, chances are it has been degraded and not safe to use anymore. Long-term storage of fuel can lead to damaging the fuel pumps and injectors. It can be avoided by keeping a fuel stabilizer and keeping fuel in a cool dry space. Perform regular oil changes and always use fresh fuel.

  3. Cold Weather: Keep a cold weather kit on hand to ensure the generator operates efficiently during colder months. This might include items like oil designed for lower temperatures or a battery warmer.

  4. Regular Testing: Conduct regular load tests to ensure the generator is functioning correctly. Running these tests will help identify any potential issues before they become major problems. For guidance, you can refer to tutorials such as our Master Electrician Ryan and Sean's video on running a generator load test. (Note for Haya: Link their video of the test after uploading it on Youtube)

  5. Fire Safety: Generators become extremely hot when operating for long hours during power outages. This can result in fire. To avoid any fire, keep flammable objects 10 feet away from your generator. Always have fire extinguishers readily available near the generator, and install carbon monoxide detectors to monitor air quality. Additionally, be vigilant about addressing any electrical issues promptly to prevent hazards.

  6. Professional Inspection: Getting your generator inspected professionally every month is essential for the safety of your generator and family. Choose ESA Licensed electrical contractors such as those from Motion Services, who adhere to ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) guidelines, ensuring your generator is safely and properly maintained.

“Generators larger than 12 kilowatts or 240 volts must have an electrical notification. An ESA inspector must also review the electrical work. Call 1-877-ESA-SAFE (372-7233) at least a week before your event to arrange this.” Electrical Safety Authority
